Port Royal habitation-Nova Scotia
Port Royal settlement was built called summer 1605 of French settlers. The settlement was built on a beautiful River district near the city now known as Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia. This was an ideal location from where the soil fertile and there were plenty of fish and wildlife in the surrounding area.
For thousands of years for fathers to Mi ' kmaw native American Indians had lived in the region and welcomed the settlers and taught them to survive in what was a new climate for the French.
Jean Biencourt de Poutrincourt, Lieutenant Governor arrived from France in the summer of 1606. 1607The spring revoked the King's Council Sieur de Mons trade monopoly as settlers had begun to sustain themselves. The settlers had built a dwelling place and cultivated crops in the fertile soil and the news was a devastating blow to most of them was a major setback in particular Samuel De Champlain.
In the autumn of 1607 settlers returned to France leaving inhabited in the care of the Grand Chief of the Mi'kmaq in Port Royal. Later the King kept the Sieur de Mons and Champdor is a member of the early settlers returned to trade with the Mi'kmaq 1608 trade monopoly. Port Royal habitation was temporarily stopped. That year led a group of French settlers Champlain up the River St. Lawrence, where they established residence in Quebec.
Poutrincourt returned to Port-Royal in 1610 with a small expedition that included his 18/19-year-old son Charles de Biencourt. They were given a warm welcome from Grand Chief Membertou Mi'kmaq. Hope to regain the Royal favour and financial backing, persuaded Poutrincourt Director and several of his family and people to convert to Catholicism. Nevertheless, the profitability of the community remained fragile Foundation.
Jesuit became interested in establishing missions in Acadia and its influence in the Royal Court ensured their participation. They became financial partners with Poutrincourt. Conflicts in Port Royal was made worse by fathers Biard and Mass arrival. Eventually lost colony its financial support due to conflicts between Biencourts and Jesuits. In may 1613, where the Jesuits removed Maine where they established another solution named Saint-Sauveur.
In July 1613 Samuel Argall of Virginia, attacked, looted and burned the inhabited while the residents were away up river under direction from England to remove the French from all British territory.While Poutrincourt returned from France following spring found his dwelling place in ruins, and his son and companions are living with the Mi'kmaq. He returned to France to transfer their holdings and leadership to his son.
Settlements on Saint Croix, Port-Royal, Quebec was the beginning of the French settlement in Canada and generations after guaranteed inclusion of French culture in North America.
Although Port Royal only existed for about 8 years, it became a model for future explorers and settlers which shows what was accomplished and achieved. It was the first European settlement North of Florida.
Port Royal habitation was rebuilt by the Canadian Government in 1939-40 after a lot of lobbying and research of preservationists. Today inhabited not only celebrating historical events in resolve in Canada but is an important Canadian conservation landmark.
